In 1941, the USO was established to provide social activities and quiet retreats for American service personnel during their stateside assignments. Here in City of Greensboro the Overseas Replacement Depot was home to two segregated service clubs.

These clubs had over 800 hostesses. ORD servicemen and women could come to the USO to find a place to read, grab lunch, and play games. At night, they could attend dances at one of the largest ballrooms in the region with live music and swing dancing
