Lucy

June 2026 marks 250 years ago, June 1776 when Lucy was born enslaved.

Stagville plantation- Durham, North Carolina

Lucy was the first recorded enslaved child at Stagville. Lucy’s birth was the first of 243 enslaved births recorded by the Bennehan family enslavers from 1776-1842.
Lucy was the daughter of Arthur and Phoebe, and sister to Arthur, Isley, Dilsey, Henry, and Shadrach.
She died at Stagville at age 39, in 1815 never knowing freedom.

Lucy's parents, Arthur and Phoebe were previously enslaved by Ralph MacNair before they were sold to Richard Bennehan. Arthur was likely born between 1738 and 1743, and Phoebe was born around 1753. Lucy's siblings' descendants have not yet been traced.
