The Powers family has an interesting history being tide water creoles. I found two other branches of these creoles in my family. They were free people of color and came down from Virginia.
In the 18th century. The earliest mentioned relation of this family are Betsy Powers of Beaufort county NC 1732 and Jerry Powers of Craven county 1759.
The family was freed prior to 1730. My family lived in both areas.
Virginias grand father was in the NC 35th Colored US Infantry out of New Bern. He is listed as living in New Bern being free before the war and having been from Little Washington Beaufort co NC.
The grandparents lived in Wilmington during the 1898 race riot and moved from there to near Wallace NC. There are two sets of Powers in the area one were related to and one we are not."
