Palmer Memorial Institute (1902-1971)
Is located between Greensboro, NC and Burlington, NC, the fully accredited, nationally recognized preparatory school was founded in 1902 by educator Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown.
It was named, The Alice Freeman Palmer Memorial Institute after the generous benefactor invested into Dr. Brown's vision.
The campus consisted of more than 300 acres of land and 14 buildings.
During it's years of operation more than 1,000 African American students attended.
The Palmer Memorial Institute provided education for local rural Black youth that emphasized academic and industrial education.
Parents from out of state also sent their children to Palmer.
The school also ran a farm that provided agricultural training and allowed for students who were unable to pay tuition attend by working their way through school.
Palmer is now a NC Historic Site.
