Academy Heights opened in 1934 to serve the African American children in a community that made its living serving White Pinehurst Resorts. The school got by with hand-me-down furnishings and books from the white schools, but it was steeped in pride. For many Blacks, an education meant a chance to do something more than just clean hotel rooms, serve meals or mow grass.

And to be a teacher at Academy Heights and live in Taylortown was to confer a high status. With integration, in 1969 the school became Pinehurst Elementary.
