AFRICAN AMERICAN EDUCATION
Since 1865
African American students attended “The Little Red School” on the West side of Murfreesboro as early as 1865.

Around 1913, a one-room school was built in town near the Meherrin River, which was soon outgrown. In 1922, it was replaced with a two-story wooden “Riverview” school built with Rosenwald funds. When “Riverview” burned in 1944, a replacement school was built on this site in 1946.
The current Riverview Elementary was built here in 1991.
