Vermel Stewart married Clyde Evans Sr. of Cary and was the major force behind the purchase of 100 acres of land in 1939 along what would later become Evans Road in Cary, named in their honor.

Clyde Sr. himself was a descendant of free people of color.

Vermel and Clyde's descendants developed several neighborhoods in Cary, including Evans Estates, Dutchess Village, Bailey Creek, Bailey Park, and Bailey Grove.

Two of the streets in those developments are named for their grandmother (Vermel Court in Dutchess Village) and great grandmother (Telia Pointe in Evans Estates).
