Underground Railroad Series: The Great Dismal Swamp, The swamp covers more than 110,000 acres on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. This now National Wildlife Refuge once was a path to freedom. Many enslaved African Americans escape slavery by hiding in the swamps in hope of getting onto a ship in Norfolk that was near by to take them north. By the 1820s over a thousand escape slaves lived in the swamps. There is so much American History here in this swamp.
