After being sold at an auction in Richmond, Virginia, on April 30, 1857, two Pasquotank County men—Davy and Luke—ran away from their new enslavers several days later, on May 4th. Davy and Luke made their escape at Clarksville, Virginia, and Sneed and Averett believed that they were trying to make their way home to North Carolina. Davy and Luke had been gone for a year, but Sneed and Averett were still searching for them and willing to pay $200 to anyone who delivered the uninjured men back to Clarksville.
