List of slaves sold in Burke County, North Carolina tells its own story.

The News Herald-Morgonton, NC
Jun 20, 2021

Image description: Left top - One of Burke County’s first prominent African American citizens, Philo Gaither Harbison, rose from slavery to become a skilled craftsman and one of the most influential entrepreneurs in Morganton in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in the Irish Creek area of the county on Jan. 28, 1856.

Left bottom- “Aunt” Nancy Jones (1856-1943) is pictured holding Nan Fleming Jeter (1905-1991). Born when slavery was still legal, Jones served households in Burke County as an herb doctor and midwife for many years and was well-respected in the community.

Center - Many African-American residents with the last name of Rutherford lived in the Bridgewater area after Emancipation. They are believed to have come from the Rutherford plantation. Pictured are John C. Corpening and Martha A. Rutherford Corpening with seven of their 10 children in front of their home in Bridgewater sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century.

Right image - Pictured is an early member of Willow Tree AME Church. Sophronia McElrath was born as a slave to Rosa and John McElrath circa 1855. On Sept. 8, 1880, she married Wilson Collette, who also was born into slavery on Oct. 10, 1861.
He worked on the construction of the dam at Lake James. They purchased a home site near Oak Hill. The Collettes had 15 children. Sophronia outlived 11 of them. She died Feb. 19, 1963. Both the Collettes were active in Willow Tree AME Church and are buried in the church’s cemetery.

In 1993, Carolyn Corpening Collins Rowe compiled a list of slaves sold in Burke County from 1791 to 1851.

Rowe, who was associated with the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society of Washington D.C., said she wanted to compile the list to help other researchers have an easier time tracing the ancestry of Black people.

Records for sales of slaves from 1851 to 1865 were not available, Rowe wrote, presumably because Union soldiers burned the Burke County Courthouse, destroying some of the documents housed there.

Rowe discovered through the records that were available that many freed slaves did not keep the last name of their last owner, but may have used a name handed down for several generations.

In honor of Juneteenth, a new federally recognized holiday celebrating the emancipation of slaves in the United States, The News Herald is publishing the known names of slaves bought, sold or gifted in Burke County.

The PDF of Rowe’s research, which includes the slave sellers and purchasers who participated in these sales can be read there: https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/.../60ce82ed...
