McCain was a retired minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and leading figure in Southern Pines. Taylor was said to be more than 100 years old and was a well-known turpentine worker in Moore County.
Demus Taylor was the founder of Taylor town.
He was Nicodemus Taylor, Taylor as in the 12th President Zachary Taylor’s brother's slave.
Taylor was one of the former slaves used to build up the Pinehurst Resort.
