The Southern News

Black Newspaper - Asheville, North Carolina

In 1933 The Southern News was a historically significant Black-owned weekly/monthly newspaper based in Asheville, NC. Eugene Smith served as editor and publisher until it ceased publication in 1974.
It served as a vital voice for the local African American community during the mid-20th century.
Along with other publications like The Asheville Advocate (1987) and The Church Advocate (1943), it was part of a tradition of Black-owned press in the region.
