Hattie Whitted Shepard was born in 1858 in Hillsborough, N.C. Her father's name was Alston Whitted. In some places it says her mother is unknown. In other places we found her mother's first name was Anna, last name unknown.

Wikitree: "Marriage record notes that Anna was enslaved prior to emancipation - likely Alston was as well, but the handwriting is hard to read - states that they have lived together since 1837, so, now emancipated, are husband and wife per the state of NC."

Hattie Shepard received her early training at Hampton Institute. On February 10, 1875, she married Rev. Dr. Augustus Shepard n Warnersville, Guilford, North Carolina. Rev. Shepard was born in Wake Forest Feb. 2, 1846-7, and died Nov. 18, 1911 -12 in Durham, NC. His parents were Richard Shepard and Flora Manly.
Hattie Whitted Shepard birthed twelve children, including Dr. James E. Shepard, founder of North Carolina Central University.

Mrs. Shepard organized the Missionary Circle at White Rock Baptist Church and taught a Bible class. She was also president of the Women’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society of North Carolina from 1930 to 1933.
Hattie Whitted Shepard died 18 Apr 1947 (aged 89) in Durham, Durham County, North Carolina,
