Lee Calhoun was a gold medalist in the 110-meter at the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia.
In 1961, Lee Calhoun again won the 110-meter hurdles in Rome and he became the first person ever to win consecutive gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles.

While at North Carolina College, Lee Calhoun won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship in the 120-yard hurdles in 1956 and in 1957. He also won the AAU championships in the 110-meter hurdles in 1956 and 1959 and won the 120-yard hurdles in 1957.

He became track coach at Grambling State University, then Yale University, and finally at Western Illinois. He served as assistant Olympic coach in 1976 and was elected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, U.S. National Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the NCCU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

North Carolina Central University honors the memory of Lee Calhoun, the school’s first Olympian, each year by hosting the Lee Calhoun High School Track and Field Invitational.
