Dora Winchester Hall - Midwife, Healer
was born in 1880 in Waxhaw, Union County, NC. She was a midwife and a healer who carried deep knowledge passed down through generations. She knew how to walk into the woods and identify the plants and herbs needed to heal the sick, ease pain, and bring new life safely into the world.
Dora Winchester Hall's parents Het Winchester and her mother Violet Funderburk were formerly enslaved in the Lancaster, SC area as was her grandmother, Mary.
Dora's mother, Violet Funderburk was born in 1849 enslaved in South Carolina . She was believed to have been owned by a slave owner by the name of A.L. Funderburk or Abel Laney Funderburk who lived in Lancaster, South Carolina and later moved to Monroe, NC. Her mother, Mary, Dora's grandmother was a mulatto slave owned by the same man. Mary lived with her daughter Violet in 1880.

Dora was well known and respected in the Waxhaw, North Carolina area for her many talents. She was a midwife and a woman of medicine. She would help anyone in need and saved many lives with her medical skills.
Dora and her husband, Thomas "Tom" Hall (1848-1921), raised nine children: Ella, Robert, Allen, Lily, Henrietta, Lucile, Crawford, Onie, and Louis. Dora passed away in 1920 and is buried at Redding Springs AME Zion Church Cemetery in Marvin, Union County, NC.
