Black enslaved women did not "own" their own bodies.
Slave breeding was a real, documented practice. Following the 1808 ban on the transatlantic slave trade, American slaveholders relied on the natural population growth of the enslaved to maintain and increase their workforce.
Systematic forced reproduction occurred. Plantation owners frequently engaged in the forced breeding of enslaved people, using the control and sexual abuse of Black women to create new generations of human property.
Sexual abuse was rampant. Rape was a common occurrence on plantations. Masters and their sons, as well as overseers, would force themselves on enslaved women to increase their "assets". The mixed-race children born from these rapes were still born into slavery, a practice known as partus sequitur ventrem.
Incest was a known consequence. In some of the most horrifying accounts from formerly enslaved people, women were forced to have sex with relatives, with hoods or bags placed over their heads to conceal the identity of their abuser.
We did locate a Thornhill Plantation in Watsonia, Greene County, Alabama where Black people were enslaved, but to date we've not located a plantation by any spelling of "Thornhill" in Ga. We also found a "Thornhill" enslaver family in Va.
