West End Cemetery

Mebane, North Carolina

West End Cemetery, West Holt Street at Moore Street, Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina
The cemetery is also referred to as the West End Community Cemetery and the Mebane West End Historical Cemetery.

West End Cemetery was established in the 1800s at Mebane First Presbyterian Church- the first African American church founded in Mebane during the Civil War.

Over time, as burials shifted to newer sections, the older part of the cemetery fell into disuse and was eventually forgotten. In recent years, the site has suffered from neglect and loitering, leaving behind damage and debris that threaten the dignity of those laid to rest here.

Our mission is to restore and preserve this sacred ground: to clean, document, and protect the cemetery so that the stories of those buried here are never lost to history again.
We hope you’ll follow along as we work to reclaim and honor this important piece of our community’s heritage.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Monday, July 8, for the West End Community Cemetery Renovation Project adjacent to the Mebane First Presbyterian Church. This renovation will help preserve the legacy of those who came before us and helped shape our community.
