Mebane, North Carolina - In the 1940s and 1950s the Whitted family, owned and operated Whitted’s Store, a popular grocery on Holt Street in Mebane’s West End community, where many of the African Americans lived.  The community purchased produce, bread. Meats, and other groceries from the store.

Whitted’s Store was a cornerstone of Mebane’s historic West End, operated by Andrew H. Whitted and his wife Arah Badie Whitted. Andrew owned and ran the grocery for 40 years. Serving as a staple for the local Black population community, it was known for everyday dry goods and the neighborhood meeting place.

Andrew and Arah Whitted's primary residence was a historic 1912 home located at 605 W. Holt Street. 

The house was owned from 1912 to 1975 by Andrew H. Whitted (ca. 1874-1965) and Arah Badie Moore Whitted (1889-1964) and their heirs. Andrew was a store owner for 40 years. Badie was born in Columbus County and taught school in Durham before marrying Andrew.
