Mr. Herbert Columbus Mitchener Sr. was born on September 8, 1916 in Smithfield, NC and was the oldest of two children to Herbert Edward Mitchener and Bertha Hood Mitchener.
He graduated from Johnston County Training School and was in the first graduating class of Harris Barber College in Raleigh, NC.
He began in a space on East Cabarrus Street but soon landed on Blount Street in the early 1950s. Mitchener continued there until the late 1970s before working at Hill's Barber Shop on South Person Street. He continued in that profession servicing the Raleigh area for over 50 years.
He died Sunday, June 24, 2007 (90 years old), at Wake Med Hospital in Raleigh. He had been a resident of the City of Oaks Health and Rehab for the past several years. He leaves to cherish his memories, a son, Herbert C. Mitchener, Jr. of Knightdale; daughters, Ella M. Stallings (Bishop), Jacqueline M. Chavis and Gwendolyn M. Herndon, all of Raleigh; a foster daughter, Mary McAllister (Otis) of Garner; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. His funeral was held at First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, 1515 Crosslink Rd., Raleigh, NC, on Thursday, June 28, 2007.
