Raleigh, North Carolina: Man is seen walking past Hargett Street Billiard Parlor, 31 May 1962. This pool hall was located at 117 East Hargett Street, present-day location of Landmark Tavern. Capitol City Barber Shop, seen on the left is present-day Arrow Haircuts.

Raleigh lawyer and civil rights leader, Fred Carnage occupied an office above the barbershop from 1932 to 1988. Carnage was only the second Black lawyer in Raleigh and the first to serve on the Raleigh Board of Education. Carnage Junior High School was named in his honor in 1965. The building was designated as a Raleigh Historic Landmark in 2011.

Lawrence C. Lindsey was the District Manager of The Winston Mutual Life Insurance Company which had a district office in this building across the hall from Attorney Carnage. Winston Mutual's home office was located in the city of Winston-Salem NC. It was the third largest Black owned Life Insurance Company in the United States.
