Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, was founded in 1865, making it one of the ten oldest HBCU's in the country.
The Department of Education considers schools that were founded in 1964 or earlier with the purpose of educating either former slaves or their descendants as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
