The school, which opened in 1865, is one of the ten oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country.

The Department of Education considers schools that were founded in 1964 or earlier with the purpose of educating either a former slave or their descendants as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
