Is considered one of the first HBCUs in this country which began as the Ashmun Institute founded in Pennsylvania in 1854, and became Lincoln University in 1866.

The Department of Education considers schools that were founded in 1964 or earlier with the purpose of educating either former slaves or their descendants as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
